Author and crafts designer
Bella Scharf developed all of the illustrated crochet instructions featured at this site.
A graduate of the well-known art and design school - Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. -
she has had a very long career in the crafts industry, encompassing designing, authoring
of books, and teaching crafts on the college level. |

Ms. Scharf wrote and
illustrated the 200-page book, "Illustrated Patchwork Crochet", published in
1976 by Butterick Publishing. The book was a Literary Guild Alternate and was featured by
Doubleday and other book clubs. Over 150,000 copies were sold. The book is currently out
of print and is now being featured on this web site.

She also wrote and
illustrated the 200-page book, "Butterick's Fast and Easy Needlecrafts",
published in 1977. The book was a Better Homes and Gardens Book Club Editor's Choice. This
book will be featured on this web site as well in the near future. |

Ms. Scharf also was a
Design Director for six years at Malina Yarn Company, N.Y., a major yarn and
consumer product manufacturer. In that role, she designed countless craft kits and afghan
crochet & knitting kits which were sold at major chain stores throughout the country.
Other credits include being Visiting Instructor of Crafts at Pratt Institute and at the
Fashion Institute of Technology, both in N.Y. , and a contributing Crafts Editor for
House Beautiful's "Colonial Homes" magazine. She also contributed articles and
craft instructions to various other consumer magazines: "Woman's Day",
"Family Circle", "McCall's", and many others. |
