This afghan
consists of strips crocheted in the medallion pattern. This is another form of
"patchwork crochet": strips are crocheted individually, then are sewn together.
When done in sport-weight yarn and in pastel colors, this pattern makes up into a
beautiful baby afghan! So enjoy learning and crocheting this pattern! |

This pattern is ideal for a baby afghan too!

Recommended
yarn for this project is 4-ply "worsted-weight" yarn, either in 100% wool or
acrylic, utilizing a size H or I crochet hook. Sport-weight or baby-weight yarn can be
used for making baby afghans, with either an F or G crochet hook. |

STEP
BY STEP ILLUSTRATED INSTRUCTIONS: |
|
Pattern is a multiple of 6 + 2. For each medallion, chain 6, then make an
extra 2 chains. For practice purposes, chain 14 loosely in Color A. |

ROW ONE OF PATTERN: Single crochet
in second chain from hook, *skip 2 chains, do 7 double crochet in the next chain, skip 2
chains, single crochet in next chain; Repeat from * across, ending with a single crochet
in the last chain (FIGURE 1). Fasten off. |

|
SECOND PART OF ROW ONE: Attach Color
A on the other side of the chaining row, into the same chain stitch where the last single
crochet was made in that row. Single crochet stitch in the same space, and then repeat
from * of Row 1 to complete the medallion pattern (Figure 2). Fasten off. Weave all ends
that are hanging into the back of the medallions' stitches. |

ROW TWO OF
PATTERN:Holding the medallion strip right side up,
attach Color B in the first single crochet of the row, chain 4, *in the next 3 stitches
work as follows (as shown in Figure 3): 1 double crochet, 1 half-double crochet, 1 single
crochet, skip 1 stitch. Then into the next 3 stitches work as follows: 1 single crochet, 1
half-double crochet, 1 double crochet, followed by 1 triple crochet stitch into the single
crochet stitch between the medallions. Repeat from * across. Fasten off and turn to the
wrong side. |

ROW THREE OF
PATTERN:(Wrong side of strip). Attach Color C into
the first stitch, chain 1, single crochet in the same stitch, *working very loosely, pull
up a loop in the next 2 stitches (Figure 4), yarn over the hook and through all 3 loops on
hook (Figure 5); repeat from * across, ending with a single crochet in the fourth chain of
the chain-4 (the top of the chain-4). Fasten off. Turn to right side of strip (Note: The
piece will be puckered after this row). |

ROW FOUR OF
PATTERN: (Right side of strip). Attach Color B into
the first single crochet, chain 1, single crohcet in the same stitch, *2 single crochet in
next stitch (Figure 6); repeat from * across, ending with a single crochet in the last
single stitch of the row. Fasten off and weave ends into the back of the strip. Repeat
Rows 2 through 4 on the other side of the medallion strip. |

Color
Choice, Gauge, and Yarn Estimation |
|
As shown in the photograph
of the "medallion afghan" it is best to select high-contrast colors, especially
for colors B and C, which form the edgings of the medallions. It's best to start the
project by crocheting a sample strip following the instructions above. Then measure the
width of the strip and estimate how many strips are needed. For example, if the strip
measures 4" wide, ten strips will be needed to make an afghan 44" wide (a
standard size "adult" afghan measures 45" X 60", a baby afghan is
usually 28" X 36"). To determine
the length of each strip, calculate similarly using the simple equation below. For
instance, if a 2-medallion sample measures 4", you will need a 30 medallion strip to
measure 60" long (size of a standard afghan). Here is the algebraic equation to use
if desired: |

Making the
baby afghan edging: Make as many strips as needed to make an afghan that measures
about 30" 40". Sew them all together as desired. To do the edging to finish off
the jagged edges on top and bottom, do as follows:
Row 1: Attach backgound color yarn in the corner stitch. Single crochet
in same stitch, then do a single crochet on the edge of the row of contasting color
stripe, then 1 single crochet around the chain-4 or the triple crochet stitch, then 3
single crochet stitches into the edge of the medallion, single crochet into the chain-4 or
triple crochet stitch; single crochet into edge of contasting color stripe. then sincle
crochet into edge of last row of strip, single crochet into edge of last row of adjoining
strip, repeat from * along the edge. Chain 1, turn.
Row 2: Single crochet in every stitch across. Fasten off, leaving 3"
end. Weave all ends into back of work. Steam-press entire afghan and flatten the top and
bottom edges. Flatten all seams too. |
